Sexual assault is a serious and unfortunately common problem in the real estate industry. One study found that 42% of female real estate agents have experienced some form of sexual harassment in the workplace. This includes things like unwanted sexual advances, inappropriate comments, and physical touching.
The real estate industry is particularly vulnerable to sexual assault because agents often work alone with clients and potential clients in private settings, such as empty houses. This can make it difficult for agents to escape from a dangerous situation. However, it’s not always members of the public, real estate clients, that are to blame. Oftentimes, the problems occur from within. In an investigation conducted by reporter Debra Kamin of the New York Times, “an employee described a ‘culture of fear’ at the National Association of Realtors, a powerful nonprofit that controls access to nearly every U.S. home listing.” The article explains that, “despite the [NAR’s] size and reach, employees and Realtors interviewed by The Times criticized its leadership as a tight circle of allies who deflected wrongdoing and punished those who complain.” And while most realtors are female, the leadership of real estate companies skew heavily male. The power dynamics can lead to intimidation, threats, misleading promises and an abusive culture which lures women into unsafe circumstances. NAR’s president denied the accusations, but resigned from his position just two days after The New York Times article was published alleging numerous sexual misconduct complaints about him and the organization.
