Paragard

Paragard is a small, "T-shaped" IUD (intrauterine device) reported to be more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.  The flexible plastic is wrapped with a thin layer of copper around the arms and stem. 

How does Paragard work?

Per the manufacturer,  Paragard works differently using one simple active ingredient - copper - instead of hormones. Once in place, it provides continuous pregnancy prevention for as little or long as you want, up to 10 years. 

What are the risks of Paragard?

Severe complications have resulted from the Paragard device during removal. These include:

• pelvic inflammation 
• chronic abdominal pain
•  infection
• possible infertility
• multiple surgeries required
